I will try to answer your questions and tell you what I have done in the past to prevent others from getting my personal information, not that it worked. I have been told by the police, other government officials and the new bank that I was doing all the right things. The did say when anyone uses a credit and/or debit card for a purchase, your card number can stolen by the person you hand your card to. They are using it themselves or selling it to others to make new cards. This is also true for purchases online.
I have my cards and they never have been lost. So far I what I know is the charges were done online with my card number and the name on the card is not mine but a man's. He did purchase an airline ticket. He did fly from one state to another, but not in my state. This scares me to death.
This is what I have been doing:
I never toss any mail or paper in the trash that has any personal information on it. It always gets burned in the fire pit in my back yard.
I have all kinds of security on my PC and it is kept up to date.
I am careful with emails and if I do not know the name it was sent from it gets flagged as spam and deleted. I do not even open it just flag and delete it . I have deleted some that I should of gotten and may have missed out on the million dollars I could of won.
I do purchase stuff online, in restaurants and stores.
I just got an email from monster dot com that their database has been hacked. I have my resume on file with them and it is current. Yes, I am looking for a job. I am going to change my information with them. Maybe a fake name with no address and phone number.
I did cancel all cards and accounts at the old bank. Their customer service is very bad and I no longer trust them.
I do believe my blog is safe because it is free and I have never given them any card information. My website is not free and it is paid for online by a card, but this will change to new card with smaller limit. I may change my blog name, email addresses and website name in the future. I even google my real name, website and blog name from time to time. Today I found the following: *******Results about 4,460*********. This is mostly from my blog. I have always been careful what I write in my blog, but now I am going to be extra careful.
I am trying to figure out where I went wrong. I have not used my cards for weeks and all I keep coming up with is, someone who I made a purchase from the past weekend stole my card number. I have talked to all the stores and they are of no help. I am not sure how I can stop using cards for purchases online but in the stores and resturants I am using cash. I am going to limit the amount on the cards and spread my funds in more than one account and used different banks.
In the end all I can say is that crooks will be crooks and we will never be 100% safe.

So sorry that you had to go through all this, Debbi. Since the authorities know that the guy purchased a flight AND flew on it, is there a better chance of arresting him?
I have been an ID theft victim myself. It seems like no matter how careful you are, it happens.
I'm glad you're not leaving but I'm so sorry this happened. Fear of this keeps my husband and I to one card with a limit so low we'd probably have to call for back-up if the car broke down or something.
