International Quilt Festival - Friday - Days Two and Three

I had another two wonderful days at the festival. On Saturday for lunch with a group of Illinois Pickles who are members of the Pickle Road Studio Yahoo group. I have been a member over a year and met Mark last year at the festival. This year I was able to meet more members and it is so good to put a face to a name. This is a great group of people and you may want to check out the group and Marks magazine. Here is the link for the group.

I spent way to much money, but I have stocked up on fabric dyes and a whole bunch of new toys. I will be taking photos and showing you them over the next week or two. Yes I have that many new toys.

Once again I tried to take a photo of the information card with each quilt so the artist is given credit.

If you did attend the festival I would love to hear from you. Did anyone else notice how may quilts were Art Quilts this year? I love Art Quilts and I am hoping to make more this year then in the past. I do love making traditional quilts but I just want to expand my skills.

Quilting Kim - Your are welcome! I am glad you enjoy the photos and the tip. I can not remember who did what quilt after seeing so many so I started taking a photo of the information card to remember and it is also good when I post the photo so the artist gets credit for their work.

Joanna van - You are welcome! I love the tumbling boy quilt too.

Beth - You are welcome! Life is just not fair because I want to go to Paducah too. Maybe next year you can come here and stay at my house and we can go to IQF together.

Studio Time and Treadle Singer Machine

Back in 1992 my husband and two sons were going from antique shops to antique shops in northern Illinois look for an antique singer machine. We found many iron bases with a new wood top attached and the price was more then we could afford. I wanted a treadle sewing machine, cabinet and iron base. We went Richmond Illinois and once again went from shop to shop and could not find what I wanted. We gave up and took the boys to an ice cream shop. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a sewing machine. I was so happy when I got to the shop it was just what I wanted and I started jumping up and down. I yelled for my husband and sons to come over to me. The shop owner must of seen how happy I was when she walked over to us. My husband asked what the price was and I was not sure I heard when she said $55.00. I looked at my husband asked if we could afford it. My husband asked the shop owner the price again and she said $55.00. He asked again are you sure? Once again she said $55.00. I could not get the words out of my mouth but I wanted to say SOLD!!!!! My husband said we will take it. With tax the total was $58.58. This was in 1992 and how could the price be so low. In all the other shop the price was over $200.00 just for the iron base and wood top. How did the shop owner know $55.oo was about all we could afford. I thank her over and over.

The best part of the story is the treadle machine, cabinet and iron base is in perfect work order. All it needed was a new belt and throat plate. I called Singer and gave them the serial number and they sent me a copy of the original owners manual. They said the sewing machine was made in 1923.





Today I have been painting and stamping fabric. I also dyed some fabric dryer sheets. I do not have a project in mind but you never know when the creative juices will flow. I have 1 string left to sew on 10 blocks and I am done. I will these on friday for the HeartStrings Quilt Project.

Tomorrow is the Bears vs Saints game and I have a dozen FQs on the line for a bet with Nancy.

I do have to say if the Bears we not in the playoffs, I would be cheering for any of the 3 other teams.

Happy Hanukkah

Happy Hanukkah!

Tonight my family will light the first of eight candles and then have a tradition dinner. Because our sons are 20 and 15 gift giving is no big deal so we will have a very quiet evening after dinner. I am just happy we will be able to sit down and have dinner together.

I have the sewing/dinning room cleaned and started decorating the house. Last Night my husband and son brought the real tree in the house. I will post photos again when the tree is decorated and when I have finished the rest of the house.

WIP Wednesday 12-13-2006

These 9-patch blocks will be part a quilt a friend Lois is making for Patrick who lost is leg while serving in Iraq. Lois has know Partick since he was 3 months old and wanted to honor his service to our country. I am proud to to be part of this quilt.My husband is doing great and I am looking forward to getting back in my sewing room.

What I Did the Past Week - Sleep and Sleep

I am so lost I do not know where to begin. I spent last week sleeping most of the days. My husband was home all week. He also spent most of his days sleeping, thanks to the pain pills. He was able to pass 2 small kidney stones on friday night. He still has 1 big one and few smaller ones. If he does not pass the big one in the next few days he will have surgery later this week. In the 21 years that we have been married he has only missed a few days of work and now he has been home 6 days.

What have I missed the past 2 week (To-Do-List When I feel Better):
1). Quilt Studio - WIP from last week - I did nothing but sleep

2). Quilt Studio - 12 X 12 Challenge - I need to read about this because

I want to join. Maybe my theme will be stars or heart using different

surface materials each month. My hand dyes, paints, fabrics and other materials.

3). Quilt Studio - 40 Quilts Service Project
4). Decide what to do with Octobers Judys Leaf Challenge - Who to quilt the top
5). Finish Novembers Judys Challenge
6). Red, White, Blue Honor 9 patch blocks
7). Finish wall quilts from class in October

Waiting for the Snow

The sky have been very dark today in Chicago and the weather people are telling us the snow is on its way. I am ready and waiting. I hate the dark grey days and love when it snows. I am lucky and do not work outside the house so I don't have to worry about rush hour traffic. My husband now works close to the house which is great.

I did manage to cut some fabric today while sitting in bed. The dogs were with me and gave me just enough room.

Thank-you for your comments the past few days. I am reading your blogs and when I feel better I will get back to leaving comments. I know I just have a cold and sound like a baby, but I also have cancer of the blood (MDS) and it just harder to get over a cold.

WIP Wednesday

Today I planned to cut fabric and sew a few blocks for my Gratitude Quilt. I am not sure how much I will get done because I am run down. My husband, son and myself have been fighting a cold for over 3 weeks and we just can't get rid of it.

Oh well the weather in Chicago is raining and very dark so the dogs and I are going to get back in bed.

Monday - Bloglines Feed Errors

Bloglines is full of Feed Errors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am spending way to much time checking each feed to see if it has an error. The errors started on Thursday, November 16th. What is happening is your Blog is not showing any new updates. Even my Blog have a feed error. I was not getting any updates on Bloglines. The error says to do nothing and Bloglines will correct the error. BUT, if the error continues then the URL needs to be checked. When I double click on the blog name a new window opens and sure enough the Blog has new postings.

IS ANY ONE ELSE having this problem? PLEASE let me know?

I am spending the day cutting my fabric stash into FQs and 1 yard pieces. I am going to make a scrap quilt with all the odd sizes I have left.

The Day After

Thanksgiving dinner was very good. My husband is an outstanding chef and did a great job. My sons and husband watched football and I dyed some fabric for Judy's November Gratitude Quilt. I have the 12 middle blocks finished and I needed fabric for the sashings and borders.

Today the weather in Chicagoland is almost 60 and the sun is shining. We had more leaves to clean up and patio furniture that needed to get moved into the shed. I am just hanging around not doing much. Tonight we are getting together with my sister, cousin and their families for dinner.

Cleaning Day Two

Today I worked on cleaning the livingroom. I have for months been dumping Moms stuff in there. Now I need to find a home for everything.

I finished the 12 middle blocks the Judy's November Gratitude Quilt Project. With the left over squares I sewed them together and I will use them when I make pillow cases. I need to go through my stash and see what fabric I have to the rest of the quilt. I want to use a bright yellow, dark and light blue. I am hoping I have enought of my hand dyes.

This afternoon I cut 6 inch squares of blue jeans to make another jean and flannel rag quilt.

Cleaning Day

When I was cleaning the closet in the Den today I found my Barbie dolls. Here are four outfits my Mom knitted for me when I was a kid. I remember her knitting little things and she would not tell me what they were. When I would open my Hanukkah gifts I would be surprised because they were knitted and sewn outfits for my Barbies and other dolls. These outfits are over 40 years old and they are in great shape. When I was going through my Mom's knitting tubs I did not find any patterns. I wonder what happened to them.

Saturday Shopping

I hate shopping on Saturdays because the stores are so busy. The cabinets were bare and before the boys started chasing the dog for their food we had to go shopping. Yesterday BB came home from college and the whole family was home. I just love it when we are all under the same roof. BB has to return to college on Sunday but he will be back home for Thanksgiving.

I am not getting any sewing done today but will makeup the time during the week.

I am working on Judy's November Project "Gratitude" Quilt. I am so far behind. It is OK with me if I do not finish it in the month of november, I just want to do the quilt.

I finished the instructions for the baskets. Now how do I get the instructions to you all? Does anyone know how I can get a PDF document into my blog?

In the Sewing Mood

This is the basket I finished yesterday. As I did each step I took a photos. The basket fabric at the start was a 9 " square. Even taking photos it only took me 1 1/2 hours to make. I will be writing the instructions today. I hope to get it done in the next few days.

You can use these baskets for candy, napkins, buttons, bread, rolls.........on and on and on. The baskets can be made any size. I wash mine in the machine and lay out to dry. I also untie them for storage.

The supplies that you need are:

Plastic Canvas Sheets, Fabric, Ribbon, and Thread.

Wednesdays WIP - Photos

The weather here is chicagoland is cold, grey and it is raining. The dogs are curled up in bed, the house is quiet and I am in the sewing mood.

Today I am working on my mystery quilt from class last week and holiday fabric baskets. I have not made these baskets in years so I have to figure out how I made them. It is very easy, fast and fun to make.

Mystery Quilt and Outside

Today I worked on my mystery quilt from class last week.

Just before the street cleaner came by the truck with the vacuum sucked the piles of leaves.

The only tree left with leaves on the block. I did not plan the fog effect, but I like it. When I took this picture the storm door window got all foggy.
